Interesting. South Dakota is one of my favorite states, and the Black Hills are beautiful.
A not uncommon sight out west. Fun when it happens along the Pacific Coast Highway.
To be used in class Monday…

I’ve mentioned before in Dynamic Earth about experiments to reactivate dormant genes in chicken embryos. The develop into rather dinosaur-looking creatures. This is pretty solid verification of the theory that birds are a development of dinosaurs.
Huh, never knew this…
Last year giant holes began appearing in Siberia. Here’s the latest…
Last year, Kawika Singson used a GoPro to capture amazing footage of lava spilling into the ocean.
Because caves are just so freakin’ cool.
Wow, just wow.
I didn’t know that!
I have posted before about the mysterious rocks in Death valley that move by themselves and the many theories as to how that could be, t seems we now have an answer.
Very interesting stuff.
This is fascinating stuff! A new paper by a team of geologists explains the complex relationship between several seemingly unrelated things. Wow!
Hope everyone is enjoying their summer, I’ve taken some time off from posting, but here we go again. A lot has been happening so here’s some of the stuff I’ve been following…

Worry about human civilization. The Earth will adjust in geologic time.
I’ve said before, that nature can throw more CO2 into the atmosphere that can we.
Doesn’t sound as good as “Landslide in Baltimore” but it’s more correct. Recent rains caused extra pressure on a retaining wall next to railroad tracks. The wall begins to give way slowly, by around 1:10 the fun starts.
And here’s a link to some cool pictures…
and it’s purple! I give you putnisite…
The doomsdayers are at it again. If you saw the recent hoopla about bison leaving Yellowstone and that that foretells an imminent eruption by the Yellowstone supervolcano, fear not the excellent science blog “Depleted Cranium” has a nice take on it.
As we discussed in my Dynamic Earth classes, Florida and sinkholes.
Is anyone “stunned” by sinkholes there?
