The Beast of Turin

This is the trailer for an upcoming documentary on the restoration of this monster. In 1910 Fiat (Fiat?) Designed and built just two S76 models. They were designed to beat the land speed record at the time (they did posting 116 mph, unheard of back then). This car has a 28.5 liter 4 cylinder engine. One more time, 28.5 liters!!!! In just four cylinders!!! Capable of 300 horsepower (that also, was unheard of back then). The fun begins at about 1:45.

Star Trek Always Seemed to Get it Right

The TV show “Star Trek” has a pretty amazing habit of predicting technology. Tablet computers, flip phones, laser surgery, Bluetooth earpieces, and medical diagnostic beds were all featured on the show, and all exist today. Here are some more Star Trek technologies that are coming to pass (or at least, may someday come to pass)…

An Important Message

The Internet is an important part of almost everyone’s life nowadays. BUT there are a lot of powerful concerns that want to change it. One problem is the TransPacific Partnership. A trade agreement between several countries (including the US) that is VERY heavy on copyright laws. The TPP is being negotiated in secret, because (as several negotiators have admitted) it would be very unpopular with the citizens of many of those countries. If it would be so unpopular, then why are we doing it? This is an issue to which we should all pay attention. This video from OpenMedia outlines some of the worrisome issues with the agreement.

IF you want to get informed, or more involved, here is the link

Here is the Wikipedia page on the Intellectual Property Rights sections of the agreement (at least what is known)

The Coming Robot Revolution

Wow, stop worrying about zombies bringing an apocalypse. This is very real. I have feared this for quite some time but this is so articulately done, it really gets to the heart of the problem. This is why Stephen Hawking has said that artificial intelligence may be the worst disaster in human history. Sent to me by a former student.

Thanks Alex!

Update: I came across this article in Slate that gives a little hope, apparently Google isn’t as close to developing that self-driving car as most folks (including the guy who made that video) thought. However, it’s only a small hope. With every major car company working on this idea, it’s only a matter of time. There is too stong a push for this sort of technology and all the othe technologies discussed are quite real.

Look Up

Does technology sometimes make us less human? Does it sometimes keep us from the “important things”? I think so, and so does this guy, a really beautiful little film. Think about it.

Well done.

Interesting B&W Stop-Motion Animated Short

I would love to know how they did this. For 1930 this is amazing special effects. The YouTube description is copied below.

Excerpt from a bizarre early stop-motion animation piece featuring Charley Bowers and a metal-eating bird. The creature devours junk from an auto scrapyard, then lays an egg that hatches and grows into a brand new car! Very impressive FX and way before CGI. Directed by Harold L. Muller.
