The Raising of the Costa Concordia

I mentioned this in class today. This was a major maritime engineering event. Lifting a 100 thousand ton ship upright off a reef in a wildlife sanctuary that is some of the last pristine Mediterranean coastline and home to many endangered species. This timelapse video shows most of the lifting that occurred earlier today.

Here is an image of the ship after raising, note the damage.

Summer Meteor Showers!

Summer is the best time to see meteor showers. The Perseid meteor shower will peak after midnight on August 11th and 12th. Find a really dark place and clear skies. I recommend, LaDue Reservoir located near Ohio State Route 44 and U.S. Route 422 in Auburn and Troy Townships in Geauga County. It’s pretty much equally distant from Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown.

Finally, an update!

Yes, I promised to update the site over summer and that seems to have fallen aside. I have been attending to some projects around the house and one thing leads to another. But as we steam into August I think it’s time to put up some fresh links and let you know what’s been happening in the world of science I occupy. Read on!

A Fond Farewell, And a Welcome to Summer Break

Just for fun, and because this is a beautiful clip. This flashmob event was orchestrated (pun there) as a celebration for the anniversary of the founding of a town in Spain by a local bank. Enjoy!

Oops! I forgot to mention that the piece is Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” the grande finale of his 9th symphony.

Thanks to Mr. Hartmann for this one.

This is Very Important!

You may have heard that documents leaked to The Washington Post and British newspaper The Guardian indicate that the National Security Agency (NSA) has had a program wherein huge amounts of personal information and messages sent over the internet and through cell phones are filtered through this government agency. Essentially our government spying on American citizens. I feel informed citizens should watch this story closely. Technology has awesome power now to eliminate privacy. These are your rights that are being compromised.

Why We Need to Spend More Money on Space Exploration

Neil deGrasse Tyson explains…

I could not agree more!
It should be noted that this is a fan made film from comments Dr. Tyson made on a TV interview, it underscores the points Dr. Tyson makes. The Space Race was indeed about military might more than scientific research. But it galvanized a nation, indeed the whole world. It did more to further peace and plenty than any war ever fought. We need it all back.
It’s spring, and in both my classes we are studying Space. It is fitting to remember the legacy of our country in that area.

Alien or Human?

Okay, this sounds like something you’d read in a supermarket tabloid. I love science mysteries! But sadly, we may never know the truth here.
